The building comprises of a new two-storey extension with rooftop plant room containing new emergency department at ground floor level, staff facilities and offices at first floor, with links to the main hospital at both levels.
While providing much needed additional space, it also improves the fire strategy for the southern end of the main hospital by providing a fire escape stairs to the first and second floor.
The external walls of the new building are clad in self-coloured insulated render to contrast with the dark red brick of the existing hospital.
The main entrance of the existing hospital is also enhanced by creating a new open foyer and cladding the facade at ground floor level with Irish granite. An aluminium canopy links the existing and new building.
