Psychiatric Observation Unit,
University Hospital Galway
The Psychiatric Department of University College Hospital Galway consists of a number of interlinked single-storey, flat-roofed, mono-pitch and apex roofed buildings, enclosing protected gardens. The new Acute Psychiatric Observation and Assessment Unit extends this arrangement, with particular emphasis on the creating of secure landscaped spaces.
The new building accommodates patients with challenging behaviour. The design allows complete observation by specialist staff, while providing safe, secure and calming rooms for patients. Bedrooms and dayrooms are bright, sunny and enjoy views over secure landscaped internal courtyards. Natural materials are used to create a reassuring and homely environment.
