BreastCheck Clinic,
University Hospital Galway

The site of the BreastCheck clinic is located on the edge of the campus of University Hospital Galway beside the Seamus Quirke Roundabout.  Surrounding buildings are one or two storeys high.  The new building accommodates two users: BreastCheck and Symptomatic Breast Care, each of which contains client, staff and operational areas.

Consideration of the context and the brief has prompted an L-shaped with arms of unequal length and depth.  BreastCheck occupies the arm nearest the public road whereas Symptomatic Breast Care faces the hospital campus, to which it bears a functional relationship.  Each use has its own main entrance.  They are connected only at one point to enable some rooms and fire escape stairs to be shared.  The plan is indented to respond to the proximity of an existing building to the south and to create a sense of enclosure to a garden between them, which is overlooked by waiting areas serving the two uses.  Like its neighbours the building is two-storeys high and clad in self coloured render.  Clients are limited to the ground floor; staff and operational areas occupy the rest of the building.
